Presentation Here is a copy of the presentation that was made at the workshop.
Introduction The IIHR at The University of Iowa (UI) is organizing a 2-day workshop primarily focussing on the 2D-video disdrometer manufactured by Joanneum Research in Austria. Several groups in the U.S. have used these instruments over the past few years. The Hydrometeorology group at UI owns a 2D-video disdrometer and has operated it almost continuously since the middle of the summer of 1997. NASA recently acquired a 2D-video disdrometer, and both NASA's and UI's instruments were used in TEFLUN-B in Florida. The instruments are scheduled for use in the upcoming LBA experiment in Brazil. The purpose of the workshop is to share experiences with these instruments, and to provide hands-on training in their operation. There will be also some time devoted to NASA's APL disdrometers. Workshop Format During an introductory session, given by UI researchers, the operation of the instrument will be described in detail. The UI's disdrometer will be an instructional aid. This will be followed by a session showing sample data collected with the instrument, as well as typical analysis. Next there will be a few short (30 minutes) presentations where representatives from various groups share their experiences/concerns with the instrument. Training sessions where people will learn how to operate the instrument will follow. Finally, there will be a problem-solving session. Problems that may occur in the field will be simulated, and small teams of participants have to bring the disdrometer back on-line. Attendance Limitations Given the hand-on format of the workshop, and because there is just one instrument available, attendance will be limited to 20 people. Time and Place 5-6 November 1998, (Thursday and Friday), the Wind Tunnel Annex of IIHR (130 W. Harrison Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240), The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Registration Fee There is a $65 registration fee, payable in cash or check at the start of the workshop. Checks should be made out to The IIHR.
