Assistant IIHR Research Engineer Gabriele Villarini has attracted considerable media attention in recent days for his research exploring the increase in heavy rain events in the Upper Midwest. As temperatures rise over the country’s midsection, more water can be absorbed by the atmosphere. And more water available for precipitation means a greater chance for heavy rains, Villarini explains. Villarini, who is also an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UI,  served as  lead author of a paper published in the Journal of Climate, the official publication of the American Meteorological Society.
