All About the “Moderate” Air-Quality Index Level

  • We classify conditions as moderate if

    • Short term (one-hour) concentrations are 39–88 µg/m3
    • Eight-hour average concentrations are 23–50 µg/m3
    • 24-hour average concentrations are 12–35 µg/m3
  • The AQI range for moderate air quality is 51–100

  • The visibility during moderate air quality is usually 6–10 miles

  • Health effects expected

    • Possible aggravation of heart or lung disease
  • Caution statements?

    • Unusually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged or heavy exertion
  • Protective actions?

    • Reduce exposure to particles by keeping doors and windows closed, seal large gaps as much as possible
    • Avoid using exhaust fans
