All IIHR graduate students are admitted through the UI Graduate College. Visit the Graduate Admissions webpage for a list of application materials and for the online application form. (Note: IIHR is a multidisciplinary institute, not an academic department, so it is not a program to which you may apply. Most IIHR students select degree programs in civil and environmental engineering or in mechanical engineering.)

Graduate Research Assistantships and Tuition

IIHR offers graduate student research assistantships (RAs) on a competitive basis to many of its students. Most RAs are continuing 12-month appointments effective until the degree objective is attained, providing progress on thesis research, assignments, and coursework is satisfactory.

The current half-time RA pay range is $26,272 for MS students and $27,137 for PhD students per year, depending on degree status. RAs with at least a quarter-time appointment receive Iowa’s resident tuition rate (see fees for Graduate College, Engineering) and a tuition scholarship that covers the full amount of Iowa’s resident tuition rate during the academic year, not including other fees.

IIHR, UI, and International Graduate Fellowships

  • Paul C. and Sara Jane Benedict Fellowship for Study of Alluvial River Processes— for one or two doctoral candidates each year who are conducting research on all or selected aspects of sedimentation, including computation of water and concurrent total sediment discharge for alluvial sand bed streams.
  • Dr. Arthur R. Giaquinta Memorial Scholarship, established in 2007 to benefit an IIHR graduate student.
  • S.K. Nanda Engineering Scholarship offers another opportunity for graduate students. It was established in 2013 to support a deserving IIHR graduate student who has demonstrated an understanding of Indian culture.
