Purpose

The Paul C. and Sara Jane Benedict Fellowship for Study of Alluvial River Processes was established in 1976 to benefit a graduate student in IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, The University of Iowa College of Engineering.  It is designated for a doctoral candidate conducting research on all or selected aspects of sedimentation, including computation of water and concurrent total sediment discharge for alluvial sand bed streams. The fellowship is awarded annually, but may benefit the same recipient for up to three years. Annual award amount varies, with a maximum of $3,000.

Award Criteria

  1. The fellowship recipient must be a student who is pursuing doctoral thesis research on problems related to the understanding, management or utilization of alluvial processes.
  2. The recipient shall have current registration as a graduate student of The University of Iowa and shall be making reasonable progress toward completion of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree.
  3. If the recipient’s performance on thesis research and course work is satisfactory, s/he may continue to receive proceeds from the fund until the degree requirements are satisfied, but for not more than three years.
  4. Theses, journal publications, and technical reports based on work conducted under full or partial support of The Paul C. and Sara Jane Benedict Fellowship for Study of Alluvial River Processes shall duly acknowledge this support.

Award Selection

Administration of The Paul C. and Sara Jane Benedict Fellowship for Study of Alluvial River Processes is the responsibility of the director of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering. Each spring, a faculty committee chooses a qualified recipient of the award (or makes a recommendation for continued funding of a current student) to receive funding the following academic year.
