Funding Opportunities Relevant to Graduate Students in IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering
International Programs Graduate Student Travel Awards
International Programs Graduate Student Travel Awards provide UI graduate students with up to $500 for travel to conferences outside of the United States so they may present the results of their research. All University of Iowa graduate and professional school students in good academic standing are eligible. Priority is given to: · proposals with strong research content and clear international emphasis (rather than applications for which only an international venue is evident); · applicants pursuing an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Emphasis in International Studies, and to Ph.D. students in the FLARE or Crossing Borders programs; and · presentations at refereed conferences. Applicants may request funding for conference travel that falls within eight months before or after the application deadline. Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply for funding within the eight-month time limit, though only one award per student per year will be made. Stanley Graduate Awards for International Research
Stanley Graduate Awards for International Research assist UI graduate students in their pursuit of foreign research and career opportunities. Up to twenty awards are made for early stages of research abroad in support of masters theses or doctoral dissertations. Each award provides up to $2,000 for travel expenses. Graduate Student Senate Travel Awards
The Graduate Student Senate awards travel reimbursements of $200 to $400 for graduate students presenting papers or posters at professional conferences. There are several deadlines each year for this award. Deadlines this year are: September 18, 2008, November 13, 2008, February 5, 2009, April 2, 2009, May 21, 2009, July 9, 2009. Elective Council of Graduate and Professional Students - Scholarly Presentation Awards Scholarly Presentation Awards of $100 to $250 are available for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to present original research at a conference. Undergraduate applications are considered separately from graduate and professional student applications. The Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students (ECGPS) is committed to helping all students at the University and is dedicated to making this process as objective as possible. Graduate Incentive Fellowship
The Graduate Incentive Fellowship Program was created to encourage graduate students to compete for national fellowship awards and other highly competitive, prestigious national awards. The Fellowship provides a 5% supplement to any nationally competitive fellowship awarded to an Iowa graduate student for the first year of the award. T. Ann Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship
T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowships provide funds for UI doctoral candidates to conduct dissertation research outside the United States. Fellowship awards range from $1,500 to $5,000 and are intended to support travel, subsistence, and/or research expenses. Tuition and fees are not covered by this award. T. Anne Cleary Fellowships are primarily intended as a supplement to other funding; documentation of other funding applications increase the likelihood of receiving a Cleary award. Applications are usually due in March. This award is available to doctoral candidates who will complete all pre-dissertation requirements by the following fall. Graduate College Summer Fellowships
This fellowship provides funding for students who have completed their comprehensive examinations by the end of the spring term and will defend their dissertation during the summer term or later. Graduate College Summer Fellowship winners receive a $3,000 summer stipend, tuition for up to 2 credit hours, and standard graduate student fees. Students who have received previous Graduate College Summer Fellowships or who have other funding sources (graduate assistantships, fellowship grants, etc.) are ineligible. Awards consider the student’s plans for their use of the fellowship over the summer, progress towards the doctoral degree, grades, and a letter of recommendation from the student’s dissertation advisor. Hubert E. Storer Engineering Student Entrepreneurial $10,000 Start-up Award
In 1996, The University of Iowa College of Engineering and Henry B. Tippie College of Business introduced a joint program leading to a Technological Entrepreneurship Certificate, earned in conjunction with an engineering degree. This nationally recognized program enables students to study the entrepreneurial process as it relates to technology. It serves engineering students planning to start and operate their own business by enhancing their understanding of the entrepreneurial process.

and founder of
Storer Equipment Company, Shreveport, LA, the College of Engineering
established the Hubert E. Storer Engineering Student Entrepreneurial
Start-up Award. It provides initial financial support forCollege of
Engineering students’ technological business plans. Any UI College of
Engineering undergraduate or graduate student is eligible to compete for
the $10,000 Storer Entrepreneurial Start-up Award. For more information about

Fulbright U. S. Student Program (External Program)
The Fulbright U. S. Student Program is designed to give masters and doctoral candidates, recent baccalaureate recipients, and young professionals opportunities for personal development and international experience. Projects may include independent library or field research, university coursework, training in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, and/or teaching assistantships (for English-language courses, in selected countries).
The Fulbright Program offers invaluable opportunities to encounter the people and culture of the host country, sharing daily life as well as professional and creative insights. It promotes cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding through engagement in the community and on a person-to-person basis.
