IIHR provides unique opportunities for undergraduates to participate in education and research programs. These include:

• Kennedy Fellowship carrying a $1,500 stipend is awarded annually to a University of Iowa senior who exemplifies diverse qualities and aptitude for success in advanced-degree work in an area of the hydrosciences. The fellowship carries with it an obligation for the student to work with an IIHR senior staff member on a research project and to develop a written report on it at semester's end.
• Shive Scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to a University of Iowa Engineering student who has achieved academic excellence in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
• IIHR also employs a number of undergraduate students to assist with research projects during the academic year and summers.
