Please save the date and plan on attending what is sure to be an excellent conference highlighting the latest research on emerging contaminants. We hope to see you in Iowa City!

What is EmCon?

Emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, hormones, personal care products, nanoparticles, and their many degradation products have become a worldwide environmental issue and a rapidly expanding research area.

Complex mixtures of emerging contaminants have been documented in many aquatic and terrestrial environmental compartments, including plant and animal tissues and drinking water.

Emerging contaminants have been associated with significant environmental impacts and dramatic effects, such as the feminization of fish and the catastrophic decline of vulture populations in Asia. In addition, subtle chronic and behavioral effects, such as altered swimming behavior in amphipods, slowed reaction to a predator stimulus, and suppressed algal growth have all been documented.

Thus, emerging contaminants present numerous challenges for scientists, engineers, regulators, and the public.

Conference Themes

This conference will provide a forum for presenting the latest research and development on all aspects related to the topic of emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment. The subtopics include (but are not limited to) the following:
