Verifying a Regional Hydrological Ensemble Prediction System Alfonso Mejia, Assistant Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Penn State Abstract: In this seminar, I will describe and demonstrate the quality and performance of a Regional Hydrological Ensemble Prediction System, hereafter the RHEPS, being developed at Penn State. The RHEPS is a multicomponent, ensemble-based research hydrological forecast emulator. The goal with the RHEPS is to enhance the skill and reliability of hydrological forecasts by facilitating the integration and rigorous verification of new system…

Talkback After the Play: Relativity

April 28 @ 9:15 pm - 10:00 pm
Riverside Theater, 213 N Gilbert St
Iowa City, IA 52240 United States

The title of Mark St. Germain’s new play, Relativity, is, we discover, a wonderful pun; the play focuses on Albert Einstein. But St. Germain is more interested in the personal than the scientific, and writes his play about Einstein as a father, specifically a father whose baby daughter, Lieserl, seemed to disappear from Einstein’s history. In Relativity, St. Germain speculates about what might have happened, and what might happen if the daughter suddenly reappeared to confront her father. Join us…

Historical, Real time, and Scenario Flood Inundation Mapping for Hazard Mitigation, Response, and Recovery     Presented by:  Brian Ashe and George Smith, Riverside Technology, Inc., Fort Collins, CO   Abstract:  There are multiple challenges to creating continuous real-time inundation maps. Real-time hydraulic modelling has been impractical due to potential instabilities and long model run times. Pre-computed static map libraries become quickly out-of-date, are often inaccurate, and do not account for dynamic changes in the flood profile. We are presenting…

Simulation of breaking waves using the High-Order Spectral method Presented By: Betsy Seiffert, Assistant Professor, Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, Florida Atlantic University ABSTRACT: We examine the implementation of a wave-breaking mechanism into the non-linear potential flow solver HOS-NWT. This model is a computationally efficient, open source code that solves for the free surface in a numerical wave tank using the High-Order Spectral (HOS) method. To solve for wave-breaking in this model, first a wave-breaking onset parameter is identified,…
