IIHR- Hydroscience & Engineering
College of Engineering, The University of Iowa

The IIHR Electronics Shop provides support for faculty, researchers, and students in the area of data acquisition equipment and systems in both basic and applied research. Data acquisition equipment is specified and purchased, or designed and constructed as needed for various research projects. The equipment is set up, maintained, and on-going support is provided for a variety of users both in the laboratory and in the field.

ITHERM unit developed at IIHR and used to map the 3D temperature plume of industrial hot water discharged into rivers.  The unit measures water depth, along with 4 channels of temperature, and correlates that information with DGPS position information to enable researchers to construct a 3D map of the size and intensity of the hot water discharge plume as it mixes with river water.

The IIHR Electronics Shop maintains a large range of data acquisition equipment ranging from the very simple pitot tubes and manometers to the latest technological advances in Particle Image Velocimetry and Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry. The IIHR researchers routinely measure a number of physical elements including; pressure, temperature, position, velocity, force, and sediment concentration.

Comparative measurements being made using both acoustic Doppler velocimeter and 1-D laser Doppler velocimeter in front of a flat bar screen. Some situations require the use of a non-invasive measurement system so that the instrument itself does not affect the flow that it is measuring.

PIV synchronizer designed and built at IIHR and used in the IIHR Towing Tank Facility. It enables researchers to synchronize the PIV frame pairs to the phase angle of an approaching wave.  It allows the selection of any point of a rising analog input signal to generate a trigger pulse for the PIV system.
