IIHR Flumes IIHR operates several flumes. Each was constructed by IIHR's Mechanical Shop, which has the expertise to construct custom flumes for any project. Flumes illustrated here are currently in use by IIHR faculty, research engineers, and students. (IIHR has also built custom flumes for Penn State, U. Wisconsin at Madison, U. Wisconsin at Milwaukee, U. Houston, and others.)
Above Photo and Left Diagram: One of IIHR's primary flumes is a multi-purpose self contained re-circulating tilting flume, which can go from -1.5% to +15% slope. (State-of-the-Art Steep Gradient Flume)
Above: IIHR's low gradient sediment re-circulating flume is 100 x 3 x 3 feet x 1.5 feet is equipped with conventional instrumentation for velocity and sediment measurements. (Low Gradient Flume)
Left: IIHR's Environmental Flow Facility (EFF) is a re-circulating flume measuring 65 x 10 ft and 7.5 feet deep. Flow is propelled by two 36 inch pumps with discharge up to 125 cfs.
Right: IIHR's high velocity flume (up to 4 meters per second and -3% to +12% slope)
For information about research conducted on an IIHR flume, see contact listed with the full flume descriptions. For technical information regarding IIHR's flumes, contact Shop Manager Pete Haug.
