A New Dimension for IIHR's

International Perspectives Course

IIHR’s course “International Perspectives in Water Resources Management,” initiated by V.C. Patel in 1997, continues to draw students from IIHR and other University of Iowa departments, and from campuses across the country. International Perspectives’ growing success over the past decade was recently highlighted in the Fall-Winter 2007 issue of International Accents, the UI International Programs newsletter (see http://international.uiowa.edu/accents/07fall/water-resources.asp).  The article, authored by course instructor Marian Muste, summarizes the course background and objectives and showcases the destinations and collaborators from the past decade.

International Perspectives will grow even faster in the coming years with two recent developments.  First, starting in 2008 the course will be offered jointly by International Programs and by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department as “International Perspectives in Water Science and Management” (053:185).  IIHR will continue to organize and manage the course, but expects a larger pool of student participants from which to select.  International Perspectives will continue to be offered regularly in the summer or over winter break depending on the climate of the country or region being visited.                                                                                 China, 2007

Second, Marian Muste and Larry Weber were recently awarded an International Programs Curriculum Development Grant for International Perspectives.  The grant will be used to improve and expand the educational elements of the decade-old course, further developing it into an exemplary international and multidisciplinary course appropriate for a diverse range of students.

International Perspectives’ next offering is December 29, 2008 – January 9, 2009.  Course participants will visit Egypt to explore a contemporary research theme (role of cyberinfrastructure in water resources management) organized in collaboration with Cairo University.

More information about International Perspectives and websites from each of the past course trips can be found at: http://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/education

Questions about the course should be directed to Dr. Marian Muste of IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering.
