IIHR Archive

 John F. Kennedy Archives (1958 – 1991)

John F. Kennedy (1933-1991) served as director of IIHR from 1966 until 1991. He oversaw a tremendous growth in IIHR staff and a diversification of research fields, resulting in part from his ability to merge industrial and federal, applied and fundamental research efforts and funding sources. A man of great energy and creativity, he initiated research efforts investigating power-plant stations, cold regions engineering, and hydraulic dropshafts, and also broadened research in sediment transport, fundamental fluid mechanics, river engineering and erosion control structures, and other topics.

This record group, the largest in the IIHR Archives, consists of 27 boxes of materials on Kennedy: 10 of “Publications and Reports,” 8 of  “Travel and Speeches,” 5 of “Correspondence” (both to and from Kennedy), 2 of  “Teaching Notes,” 1 of  “Biographical Materials,” and 1 of “IAHR and Miscellaneous.” There may be some overlap among these categories: the Biographical Materials box may contain correspondence and additional publications that are not duplicated elsewhere; “Travel and Speeches” and “Publications and Reports” may include duplicate folders for the same event (e.g., for speeches that were later published). Also, labels on the file folders (especially “Travel and Speeches”) may not be identical to the catalogue record below, but the two should be easy to correlate. Files may include papers or research performed by other individuals who worked jointly with Kennedy. For additional files on Kennedy era, see the archive sets “IIHR Publications and Reports,” “IIHR Grants and Contracts,” and “IIHR Administration and Miscellaneous” for the appropriate years.
