Beaver Creek watershed monitoring

Posted on July 28th, 2017

Monitoring and water sampling is being done this summer at nine newly constructed wetlands in the Beaver Creek watershed area of Floyd and Chickasaw counties by summer intern, Ian Simpson, from Ohio Northern University in Strongsville, Ohio.

The wetlands were constructed as part of a flood mitigation strategy for the area funded by the Iowa Watersheds Project.

The monitoring includes collecting grab samples on a weekly basis to test for nitrate and orthophosphate, as well as field measurements of specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature. These samples are collected at all inlets and outlets of the wetlands.

With the data collected, IIHR and IGS researchers will analyze the results to see how effectively these wetlands are reducing nutrient loading under various hydrologic conditions.
