Dec 27 and 28, 2013 – Friday and Saturday

And we’re off!!  Our plane was taking off from Friday afternoon for a 14 hour non-stop flight from the O’Hare airport in Chicago to New Delhi, India.  We had been greeted by attendants when we checked in at the terminal of Air India, our airline that we were taking to India.  Upon answering “Yes” to the question “Are you the Iowa Group?”, the ladies recieved roses and the gentleman received small boxes of chocolate.

After the rush of an early morning, getting checked in at the airport, and going through security, it was nice to settle into our plane seats.  Best get comfy for a 14 hour flight!  The route was across the Great Lakes into Canada and over Greenland and then flew south through Europe.  After reading 8-plus papers and articles about the area we were going to be working in, sorting 7 picture albums, 5 trips to the restroom, 3 naps, 2 meals-becoming more Indian, the closer we got to our destination, and 1 movie, we landed in New Delhi to begin our adventure.

After landing in the airport, the tricky task of getting all persons and luggage to the hotel began.  Fortunately, our fantastic driver and guide for our stay, Raj, was there to supervise our 4 cars and make sure everyone arrived safely at our hotel, Sona Hospitality F66 in Gurgaon.

Extremes can already be easily seen in the city from our half hour drive from the airport to the hotel.  There are roadside food stands with people walking, biking, or pulling carts with fruit on them making their way amongst the manual cars and buses.  A few blocks down the highway, you pass through a very industrial area containing factories and buildings with broken and collapsing walls and floors that give way to new sparkly hotels and office buildings.

After unpacking, we met to have at the hotel restaurant to have dinner and organize logistics for the course and next few days ahead.   Our first dinner with real Indian food was delicious!  Among other dishes, we tried “Aloo Gobhi”, potatoes and cauliflower with spices, and Palek Paneer, pureed spinach and cheese eaten over rice.
