Jan 3, 2014 – Friday

It was an early start to this morning with packing up all our things and leaving most of the luggage in one room at F66.  We took a weekend bag and boarded the train to travel to Roorkee which is about 5 hours north of Delhi.  After arriving in Roorkee, we dropped off our bags at the Kosha International House, a dormitory on the campus of IIT Roorkee and started our tours and meetings.  IIT Roorkee is very well known for its hydraulics research, and we had the opportunity to tour the hydraulic labs.  A really neat floodplain model that represents 20 kilometers of floodplain was being used to test a new bridge design for the highway that crosses it.  We also were able to tour the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) laboratories where we got to see their GIS computer lab and another lab to learn about isotope research.  After touring NIH, we learned about the canal and river area that we would see the next day.

Next was dinner at the Kosha International House.  Many of the master’s and Ph. D. students attending IIT Roorkee were able to join us for dinner.  It was fun to talk with them and learn more about their experiences at IIT Roorkee.  They call the master’s degree of technology “Mtech” for short.  After dinner they showed us Iowa students around the campus.  The campus is very large with multiple buildings dedicated to each type of engineering-chemical, mechanical, industrial, civil and hydropower.  We were able to see the track and field area and the library lit up at night.  Their campus library is the largest library in India!
