Preliminary Flood Hazard Product Review Meeting

Following the 2008 flood disasters, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Iowa over $640 million in disaster recovery assistance through a Community Development Block Grant. There was an allocation of $15 million dollars out of this total grant amount, to be managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to develop new flood hazard mapping in Iowa, and update existing flood hazard maps.

Utilizing these resources, the IDNR partnered with the Iowa Flood Center at the University of Iowa, to begin developing flood hazard studies throughout the State.

One goal of these flood hazard studies is to develop new base-level (approximate) flood hazard areas (Zone A areas) and incorporate existing enhanced-level (detailed) flood hazard data (Zone AE areas) into digital and hard copy maps that can be used by communities to better understand, manage and mitigate flood risk.

A meeting has been scheduled to inform the communities within Appanoose County of the results, impacts and next steps of the new mapping being completed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Flood Center.
