Historical Modeling of Pool Eight

The objective of this research was to compare historical and current conditions in Pool 8 of the Mississippi River. A comparison of different discharges over different bathymetries was conducted.

The results can be very helpful to restoration attempts on Pool 8. Also, they can be used to study possible management actions to restore an ecosystem.

The tools used are a 2-D model SHR and in-house codes developed in ArcGIS.

The Figure below presents velocities for historical and actual conditions on Pool 8.

A comparison of velocities output from the model for current and historic conditions. Near the bottom note the “lower pool” area, which is the most changed by the construction of the locks and dams.
