An overview of Iowa Greenhouse Gas emissions is shown above. Fuel combustion for power generation and transportation comprise the largest fraction. Consideration of agricultural sequestration in a statewide or regional GHG-biofuel strategy is important, and managing agricultural sequestration to the state’s advantage could have significant economic and environmental benefits. Particularly important concepts in the above figure include: (a) the potential for agricultural sequestration through conservation tillage practices is large, approximately 15% of fossil fuel GHG emissions; (b) soil carbon transferred to lowlands and waterways through soil erosion is significant when compared to agricultural and fossil fuel air-land net fluxes; and (c) agricultural CH4 and N2O emissions are significant in terms of GHG emissions. |
