General description
The wind generator
carriage is another Sanshin-Mori collaboration for expansion of the IIHR
- Hydroscience & Engineering capabilities for wind experiments with a
towed ship model to increase the surface ship database for two-fluid
force and moment, ship motions, and flow measurements for eventual
validation of two-phase CFD simulations.
The wind generator is a
custom design featuring a four-wheel carriage, fan section consisting of
eight radial-type fans, vanes, contraction, and exit nozzle. A
control rack powers the fans and is used for wind speed adjustments.
The carriage is placed between the drive carriage
and the PMM carriage. The latter is used to attach a ship model
with a superstructure from a 3DOF mount that enables pitch, heave, and
roll motions. Tests include forces and moments, ship motions, and
3dpiv measurements in the boundary layer of the superstructure.
The model scale, superstructure shape, and wind speeds are designed to
create up to 20% air resistance in the total towing resistance budget
and significant ship motions.
