Congratulations to IIHR Research Engineers Keri Hornbuckle and Michelle Scherer, who have both been appointed Donald E. Bently Professors of Engineering, effective July 1, 2015.

Keri Hornbuckle, professor of civil and environmental engineering and associate dean for academic programs, is an internationally recognized expert in the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment. Her research publications have been cited more than 3,200 times, and have appeared in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, of which she is associate editor. Hornbuckle has enhanced our understanding of how semivolatile organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated diphenyls (PCBs), and emerging chemical pollutants behave in the environment. She is also a UI professor of occupational and environmental health and researcher at the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research.

Michelle Scherer, professor and departmental executive office of civil and environmental engineering, has conducted groundbreaking work on redox reactions at mineral-water interfaces. Her research has appeared in Environmental Science and Technology, JGS-Atmospheres, and more. She previously received the UI Faculty Scholar Award, the UI College of Engineering Award for Exceptional Research, and the 2010 Malcom Pirnie/AEESP Frontier Research Award. The National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and Department of Agriculture have all funded her research. Scherer is also a researcher at the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research and the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute.
