IIHR Associate Faculty Research Engineer Ibrahim Demir will receive the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) National 2018 Outreach Award for his Flood Artificial Intelligence (AI) system at the ASFPM Conference in Phoenix on June 21.

Demir, who is also an affiliate of the Iowa Flood Center and an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Iowa, says his Flood AI system helps raise awareness by making flood information available to the public in a uniquely accessible way. “It helps people understand what flood predictions would mean for their homes and communities,” he says.

The ASFPM is the world’s leading voice for sound floodplain management, with 17,400 practitioners, 9,500 Certified Floodplain Managers, 36 chapters, and 73 corporate and agency partners worldwide.

The outreach award was established to acknowledge exemplary efforts on the part of media to increase information and/or awareness of flood issues among the general public. In the past, the outreach award has often gone to media outlets, such as newspapers and broadcast media (The Weather Channel, The New Jersey Spotlight, Sun Herald, Seattle Times, Houston Chronicle). It is also for an individual, private organization, or governmental unit or agency that has increased information and/or awareness of flood issues among the general public.
