Join the Iowa Geological Survey and the Iowa Flood Center at BMC Aggregates’ annual “Sunday at the Quarry” event to get an up-close look at what the inside of a quarry looks like! The theme this year is “Managing Our Natural Resources.”

The event, which is open to the public, is in celebration of National Earth Science Week. Attendees will be able to collect mineral, rock and fossil samples, and specialists will be on hand to help identify the samples. Visitors can even take home what they collect!

IGS will have two presenters (Geologists Phil Kerr and Dr. Paul Liu) who will introduce the geology of the quarry, identify rocks and fossils that the visitors collect, and answer any questions.

Other participating organizations are the University of Northern Iowa, Black Hawk Soil and Water District, and U.S. Geological Survey. There will be special presentations related to watersheds, resources along rivers, hydrogeology of rivers, recreation in rivers, flooding issues and water conservation efforts.

Also available are AGI Earth Science Week Tool Kits from BMC Aggregates to area teachers by contacting the BMC office at 319-235-6583.
