History and Future of Automotive Wind Tunnel Technology

In view of NACA’s 100th anniversary last year, we look back at some of that organization’s history up until the years after World War II, especially as it relates to the development of wind tunnel technology.  The discipline of au­tomotive aerodynamics is descended from aer­onautics; some examples going back to the 1920s up until today will demonstrate this long relationship.  As a company that specializes in test facility design and operations in both the aerospace and automotive industries, the history of Jacobs Technology (previously Sverdrup) is also dis­cussed in connection with the develop­ment of aeronautics and later automotive aero­dynamics in this country.  We will outline the evolution of automotive aerodynamics with particular emphasis on the automotive wind tunnel, which remains the industry’s primary tool for aerody­namic and aeroacoustic product development, and show how wind tunnel capa­bilities continue to evolve to provide the best possible laboratory simulation of the open road environment.

Joel WalterJoel Walter has been with Jacobs in its Detroit office since 1995 and is inter­nationally recognized for his contributions to the design and effective use of aerodynamic and climatic test facilities, primarily for the automotive indus­try but also for the motorsports and aerospace industries.  He works in the areas of aerodynamics, wind noise, wind tunnel systems design, advanced mathematical modeling, and facility commissioning and calibration. He serves as an internal resource across Jacobs’ private-sector and government operating segments in areas related to test techniques, measurement uncertainty, and statistical process control.  He currently works as a program manager in charge of engineering teams responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of state-of-the-art automotive wind tunnels.  He is a member and past Chairman of the SAE Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Committee and a member of the AIAA Measurement Uncertainty Analysis Working Group.  Joel is a native of Cedar Falls and received his B.S.M.E., M.S.M.E., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
