“Hydro-Morphological Analysis of River Reaches by Means of Advanced Field Measurements and Numerical Modelling”

Abstract:

In the presentation a representative overview is given of the hydro- and morphodynamical investigations carried out in several Hungarian river reaches. In the chosen study sites flow measurements were performed with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers coupled with up-to-date data processing making as much use of this technology as possible. The measurements were carried out both in fixed boat and in moving boat options, and besides the conventional discharge determination the analysis focused on the quantification of the three-dimensional character of flows. Successful attempts were made on the derivation of some hydro-morphological features of the study reaches, based on the ADCP data. At some sites, suspended sediment transport measurements were also performed using laser diffraction based instruments (LISST) providing detailed information of spatial sediment distribution. This data could also be used to support ADCP based suspended sediment investigations. Besides the field measurements, validated three-dimensional numerical models were applied for flow and sediment transport simulations using the Reynolds-averaged (RANS) method.

The studies offer a detailed insight into the complex spatial flow and sediment characteristics, and relevant hydro-morphological features, as well as to the morphodynamics of the rivers. The results improve the understanding of fluvial flow and morphology in themselves, support the planning of river training works, inland harbors and habitat description. Moreover, the results serve as a basis for methodological development for the hydro-morphological characterization of water bodies, playing an essential role in the European Water Framework Directive.
