The Winter 2011-12 issue of IIHR Currents has been published on the web at

The issue focuses on the many collaborations and partnerships IIHR–Hydroscience & Engineering has within the University of Iowa and beyond.

Also included are profiles on graduate students Luciana Kindl Da Cunha of Brazil and Tibebu Ayalew of Ethiopia; Brad Reuter, an undergraduate student on scholarship working with Thanos Papanicolaou; Troy Lyons (BSE 2000, MS 2002 in civil engineering), a key support person on many IIHR research teams; Michelle Scherer, professor and departmental executive office of civil and environmental engineering, and Pablo Carrica, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, both faculty researchers at IIHR; Jack Cassidy, alumnus; and Tatsuaki Nakato, retired research engineer at IIHR.

Funding Awards and Renewals:

Marcela Politano was awarded a contract for $172,269 from Ch2M Hill for  “CFD Modeling to Support the Reduction of Fish Passage Exposure to Predator Habitat at McNary Dam (Task Order #4).”

Mark Wilson was awarded a noncompetitive renewal for $41,005 from Midwest Generation  for “Maintenance of Data Acquisition System – University of Iowa Thermal Model Data Acquisition System Service and Maintenance for Joilet Station.”

Michelle Scherer was awarded a non-competitive renewal for $79,437 from US Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratories for “Argonne-SFA.”

Mark Wilson was awarded a non-competitive renewal contract for $39,168 from Midwest Generation for “Maintenance of Data Acquisition System — University of Iowa Thermal Model Data Acquisition.”

Bill Eichinger was awarded a new contract for $60,000 from the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, Midwest Area, for “Analysis of LiDAR and Meteorological Data from Around Animal Confinement Buildings.”

Fred Stern was awarded supplemental funding of $69,016 from the US Department of Defense for  “Stochastic Variable Physics SBD for High Speed Waterjet Ships

Pablo Carrica was awarded supplemental funding of $31,250 from the US Department of Defense for “Bubble-Wall Interaction on Full-Scale Boundary Layers.”
