The Iowa Geological Survey was established in 1855 (then known as the Geological Survey of Iowa) to serve the people of the state  by advancing the study and application of geology. The long and productive history of the IGS reflects Iowa’s recognition of the importance of geologic conditions to economic and environmental welfare in the state.
